Upheaval Dome, vue panoramique depuis le bord du cratèrephoto vue 2009 foisUpheaval Dome est un dome de sel au fond d'un cratère de près 5km de diamètre. Son à¢ge est estimé à un peu moins de 170 millions d'années. Son origine exacte n'a pour l'instant pas pu être déterminée avec certitude : selon une première théorie, la plus plausible selon les plus récentes études, il s'agirait d'un cratère d'impact d'un astéroà¯de, qui aurait subi l'érosion. Selon une seconde théorie, il s'agirait d'un simple phénomène géologique : le dôme de sel serait remonté à la surface par le biais de pressions des roches avoisinantes.
